2 injured, 3 arrested in Calif. tribal standoffDispute between members of Central Calif. tribe turns violent
COARSEGOLD, Calif. (AP) ' Authorities say members from two factions of a Central California tribe have voluntarily left government offices after a violent clash led to one person being stabbed and another suffering a head injury.
Madera County Sheriff John Anderson said Tuesday that members of the rival Chukchansi Indian leadership factions agreed to stay away for 48 hours with the hopes the Bureau of Indian Affairs would intervene.
Anderson said the groups agreed to the stipulation after he threatened to arrest them for unlawful assembly after a fight outside the government center.
Three people were taken into custody.
The fight was connected to takeover of a tribal office on Monday as 40 people claimed it was denied its rightful place on the tribal council following an election in December.
