1000 Solid Edge Licences Going to Shandong Manufacturers

(July 23, 2001)
UGS today announces that it has signed an agreement with Shandong Gongda Software Company to sell Solid Edge to small- and medium-sized manufacturers in the Shandong Province of China. Under the agreement, Shandong Gongda Software Company will sell 1000 licenses of Solid Edge. The program is sponsored by the Shandong Economic and Trade Commission’s New Technology Spreading Center.

Shandong ranks as one of China’s top three provinces in gross domestic product. Manufacturing companies in Shandong produce coal mining machinery, automobiles, machine tools, computers and peripherals and electro mechanical products. Similar to other provinces in China, only a limited number of companies are using 3-D CAD technology in their product design process.

“In order to improve our capability in new product design, to keep abreast with economic advancement and to increase our competitiveness as a whole, we realize that there is an urgent need for our small to mid-sized manufacturers to move from 2-D to 3-D design,” says Mr. Yuhua Liu, director of the New Technology Spreading Center.

The Shandong Province activity expands Solid Edge success in China. UGS already has sold several thousand seats of Solid Edge to Chinese manufacturers. Also, UGS recently announced the successful deployment of 20,000 Solid Edge licenses across 200 Chinese universities to help educate and train the nation’s design engineers.

“As we are all aware of the contribution and enthusiasm UGS has made in China, we fully support this special program in Shandong to increase the innovative capability for small and mid-sized enterprises. And because Solid Edge is an easy-to-use Windows-based, mid-range CAD system with comprehensive functionality, it is the best solution to migrate from 2-D to 3-D,” says Mr. Liu.

Many market-leading companies in Shandong have been using UGS technology. “Shandong University is one of the first universities to benefit from the UGS/China Ministry of Education program. We believe Solid Edge will not only enhance our province’s overall competitiveness, it will also lay a foundation for advanced technology for our future,” says Mr. Chaoying Yang, general manager, Shandong Gongda Software Company. The company plans to establish Solid Edge training centers at Shandong University, Qingdao Machinery Research Institute, Shandong Technology University, Shandong Engineering Institute and Yantai University.

“We believe technology advancement is a major criteria for maintaining and enhancing a nation’s competitiveness. We are pleased to roll out this program to help small and medium enterprises upgrade their technology in an affordable way. The earlier an engineer changes to the 3-D design environment, the faster they will gain the productivity advantage,” says James Tay, managing director of UGS Far East.

The New Technology Spreading Center at the Shandong Economic and Trade Commission was established in 1981in accordance with the unified arrangement of the China State Economic and Trade Commission. The center provides and promotes enterprise-wide technology innovation services to the Shandong Province. It also serves as the link to communicate with the government. Through better deployment and conformity of the technology resources within the community, the main objectives of the center are to provide and promote advanced and appropriate technology for enterprise development and with excellent intermediate services, help accelerate technology transformation in order to cultivate new profitable opportunities. The center and similar organizations across China form a network for new technology promotion. It is also one of the members of the China State’s Enterprise Technology Innovation Cooperation Network.

The Shandong Gongda Software Company is operated by Shandong University. It is recognized by the Shandong Technology Commission as an advanced technology enterprise to provide development, technical services and systems integration for product design, product data management, product lifecycle management, engineering consulting, engineering design, software development, training and integration of network systems. The company has a team of highly qualified professors, consultants, and experienced technical engineers who are responsible for software development and day-to-day pre- and post-sales services.
