Apple today released a public beta of QuickTime 5. The new version offers several enhancements over version 4, but does not include all of the features that will be available in the full release, scheduled for some time in 2001. New features include:

  • An updated media player with a new QuickTime TV network channel display and new audio controls;
  • A new component downloader for adding plugins on the fly;
  • Support for new web codecs, including Macromedia Flash 4, Cubic VR and Shoutcast;
  • Protection from "skipping," or dropping frames through Internet transmissions.
  • Hot Picks guide highlighting new QuickTime TV content;
  • An improved digital video codec for improved iMovie playback performance;
  • Real-time professional video editing support for professional applications such as Final Cut Pro.

Features not included in this release but expected by the time of the full release include support for Sorenson Video 3 and easy developer support for skins.

The public previews of QuickTime 5 for the Macintosh and QuickTime Streaming Server 3 are available immediately for download from http://www.apple.com/quicktime and http://www.apple.com/quicktime/servers, respectively. The public preview of QuickTime 5 for Windows will be available by the end of the year.
