Midiman has started shipping its MIDIsport 8x8/s, a USB MIDI interface for the Mac. The new unit offers eight in and eight out ports, as well as connectors for legacy serial ports.

According to Midiman, the MIDIsport 8x8/s features full SMPTE implementation, and multiple units can be used simultaneously. The unit can also act as a standalone, software-controlled MIDI patchbay.

Features include:

  • Eight independent in and out MIDI Interface (128 x 128 MIDI channels);
  • 19" single-height, rack-mount chassis;
  • Unit can operate in "thru" mode;
  • MIDI in and out activity indicators for each port;
  • Includes 6 ft. USB cable;
  • Built-in "MIDI cable tester" mode;
  • Mac OMS Compatible for USB operation.
  • SMPTE Time Code Writer/Reader;
  • Reads and writes 24, 25, 29.97, 30 drop or 30 non-drop frame LTC SMPTE formats;
  • Converts LTC SMPTE to MIDI Time Code (MTC) for synching any MTC capable software;
  • Selectable flywheel that can be set to any value from 1 frame to 255 frames (or forever).

The new MIDIsport 8x8/s requires Mac OS 8.6 and above with Opcode's OMS for USB. On serial systems, it requires System 7.5.1 or newer with Opcode's OMS for serial port operation. It includes Mac Control Panel software, which allows any SMPTE time write offset to be set up. For more information, visit
