Adobe today announced it will ship Photoshop 6 some time in the next month. Photoshop 6.0 offers dozens of new features, including integrated vector functionality, improved Web workflow and a streamlined interface. The new version will also ship with ImageReady 3.0, an upgrade to Adobe's graphics application designed for the Web.

Here are some highlights of Photoshop's new features. We'll bring you more details later. We'll also be reviewing Photoshop 6 as soon as Adobe releases Photoshop 6 to the public.

  • New vector drawing tools with rollover styles for quick creation of buttons and other Web graphics.
  • Users can easily create multi-state JavaScript rollovers by saving custom button shapes in libraries then selecting rollover styles in ImageReady 3.0 to automatically slice the buttons and apply a variety of new layer effects.
  • Tighter integration between Photoshop 6.0 and ImageReady 3.0.
  • When exporting files for the Web, weighted optimization allows designers to use grayscale channels to vary compression settings across an entire image.
  • By applying vector clipping paths to each layer in a photo composition, designers can combine crisp resolution-independent text and graphics with soft-edged photos.
  • Users can format and output images as Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files or directly to PostScript printers while maintaining the text as vector type.
  • New content layers, layer styles and warping controls.
  • Photoshop's revamped interface includes hundreds of enhancements, including layer management capabilities and a context-sensitive tool options bar.
  • On canvas text entry and advanced formatting.
  • Shared PDF annotations.
  • Consistent color management with Adobe Illustrator.
  • Streamlined Web workflow with Adobe GoLive.

Photoshop 6.0 will include a 30-day, fully functional trial version of Adobe GoLive 5.0 and the Adobe GoLive QuickStart Guide for Adobe Photoshop Users. Photoshop 6.0 customers can take advantage of a limited time offer to purchase GoLive 5.0 for just $99 until March 1, 2001. This price will only be available to customers who purchase GoLive through the installed trial software. Photoshop 6.0 for Mac OS 8.5, 8.6 and 9.0 is expected to ship in the third quarter of 2000. The estimated street price for Adobe Photoshop 6.0 is $609. Registered users of earlier versions of Adobe Photoshop can upgrade to version 6.0 for $199. This upgrade pricing does not apply to Limited Edition versions. French, German, and Japanese versions of Photoshop 6.0 will be available soon after the initial release, according to Adobe.
