Umax technologies has announced a new scanner in its line of home office/small office flatbeds. The new Astra 3400 scans images at 600 x 1,200 dpi in 42-bit color using an internal 14-bit analog to digital (A/D) converter. The scanner can operate automatically to detect whether a document or photograph would best be rendered in color, grayscale or black and white. The Astra 3400 does not require the user to define media type, color type or size. IIPE technology also determines the optimal resolution, auto-crops the image area, and rotates the output to the correct orientation if the source image is askew on the scanner bed, according to Umax.
The Astra 3400 software package includes Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home Edition, Caere OmniPage LE OCR, NewSoft Presto! PageManager for managing images and documents and NewSoft PageType for scanning and filling out pre-printed forms. The UMAX Copy Utility provides document copying functionality. The Astra 3400, with USB connectivity, is available now for $99. For more information, visit http://www.umax.com. Post a comment or question on the Creative Mac World Wide User Forum!
