Apple says it will release the next version of QuickTime this summer. The company says cross-platform support for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, Flash 4 for Web animation and an enhanced QuickTime VR playback. The new VR playback will include unlimited spherical views of virtual-reality scenes.

In addition, the next QuickTime will feature more recent software from QDesign that has been optimized to take advantage of the Velocity Engine. This software, according to Apple, can encode music three times faster than previous versions. QDesign's Music Codec 2.1 received Velocity support back in early April.

In other QuickTime news, Apple announced today that QuickTime 4 has received more than 50 million downloads.
