USB device supports SmartMedia, CompactFlash and PCMCIA

Viking Components, Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., will ship a new USB flash reader next month that can transfer images from a variety of media used in digital cameras at 1.5 MB per second. The IntelliFlash USB Memory Reader supports any USB-capable Macintosh running Mac OS 8.6 or higher. (Older iMacs require Apple Firmware Update 1.0 and Apple iMac update 1.1.)

The new reader can handle SmartMedia, PCMCIA Type I or II ATA cards and CompactFlash. It allows for hot swapping between cards. The IntelliFlash will carry a suggested retail price of $79.99.

Viking also revealed that it would be shipping 640 MB and 1 GB ATA Type II cards in April, up from the current ceiling of 320 MB. Pricing was not available for these new cards, which are expected to be used more for government applications requiring solid-state storage.
