Canon Introduces DV Camcorder
ZR10 offers FireWire I/O

Canon USA Inc., Lake Success, N.Y., has announced its newest digital video camcorder targeted at the consumer market. The ZR10, which includes FireWire/IEEE 1394, is expected to begin shipping in April. The new model comes equipped with a 10x optical and 200x digital zoom, image stabilization and a 2.5" LCD view screen and a color viewfinder. The focal length of the optical zoom is 4.2-42mm f/1.9, which is the 35mm photo lens equivalent of 40.3mm to 403mm. The whole unit weighs 1.5 lbs. and measures 2" x 3" x 5".

The ZR10 can also function as a still camera able to store up to 700 photos on a single digital videocastte. It records each image, along with narration or ambient sound, for about six seconds.

According to Canon, the camcorder uses an enhanced power scheme, allowing for more than five hours of recording (with an option batery pack) with the LCD viewfinder on. The optional battery pack can charge 70 minutes worth of power in 15 minutes. Other features include:

  • Programmed auto exposure for a number of pre-programmed situations, icluding sports, portrait, spotlight, sand and snow and low light;
  • Digital effects, including four fade effects (Fade Trigger, Vertical Wipe, Horizontal Wipe and Mosaic fades); adding art; black and white; sepia; and mosaic;
  • Digital stereo sound, which supports 16-bit and 12-bit two-channel mode;
  • Manual controls for overriding the automatic settings for focus, exposure, white balance and shutter speed;
  • A/V insert and audio dubbing;
  • Analog line in to accept signals from the television or VCR and record them onto the MiniDV format;
  • Built-in speaker;
  • LP mode;
  • 16:9 wide screen TV effect;
  • Time code;
  • Wireless remote control.
