MARCH 11, 2004 Custom Brushes in Painter 8
Now the first thing you want to do to create a blender brush is to switch the "Dab Type" from "Airbrush" to "Circular" or "Static Bristle." The reason for this is that the Circular and Static Bristle dab types have more options available to them. I'm going to work with the Static Bristle type. [an error occurred while processing this directive] We're going to skip the Stroke Type right now and move down to "Method." From this menu, select the "Plug-in" option. This then gives you a whole host of options in the "Subcategory" parameter. By default, the "Confusion Brush" option will become selected. Try it out on your canvas. If it isn't what you want, there are several things you can do about it. First off, you might want to change the opacity of the brush. With a blender brush, which doesn't actually apply any paint, the opacity setting affects the degree to which the blending effect is applied. So a lower opacity means a more subtle effect. WIth the Confusion Brush, you can take it down to about 2 percent. Or you can change the Expression to "Pressure," which means that the effect will be modulated by the amount of pressure you apply with your pressure-sensitive pen, assuming you have one, which, if you're working in a paint program regularly, you should. Or you might want to change the Stroke Type. The default "Single" works well, but there are two other options you can use here. The "Multi" option gives you a nice, multiple-nib effect, but you can't draw with it in real time. The other option is "Rake," which helps give your stroke a little more direction. (The "Hose" option can't be used for a blender brush because it doesn't support the Plug-in method.) Or you might want to change the Subcategory of the brush to something other than Confusion Brush. There are several options that you can use for various blending effects, including: And here's a look at some of the better ones applied to an image. For the rest of this tutorial, I'll be using these settings: So now that you've found (presumably) your own basic style for your brush, it's time to move on to the dynamics of the brush.
