Nesting character styles
Once you have your character styles set up, placing them into a paragraph style is simple. The easiest way is simply to select an entire paragraph that contains all of your character styles (and no extraneous styles), open up the Paragraph Styles palette and click the "Create New Style" button.

Automatically InDesign will cull through your selection and approximate the positions of the character styles within the paragraph. So, if I select another paragraph and apply my new style, I get this.

Not too bad. However, that's not exactly what I want, so I'll need to go in and do some editing. To edit a paragraph style, double-click the style in the Paragraph Styles palette. A dialog box will pop up, and you'll navigate to the section called "Drop Caps and Nested Styles."

In my case, I have two problems with the paragraph style that was automatically generated. First, there's too much of a space after the drop cap. This is owing to the fact that the "Numeral" character style was only applied to the first character in the list. I need it applied to the first two characters so that my custom tracking will bring the body of the entry closer to the drop cap. So I'll change the Numeral value from "through 1 Characters" to "through 2 Characters."

And that tightens up the body copy with the drop cap.
