MARCH 18, 2004 Nested Styles in Adobe InDesign CS
Creating the character styles To begin, we'll need to format some of our characters manually and then define them as paragraph styles. There's no need to create nested styles for the kicker and headline in my sidebar, since they're single-style elements. So we'll deal just with the body copy itself: the number (drop cap), the entry header, the body copy and the end bug. So first I'm going to go through and format each of the individual elements of my paragraph. I want my numeral to be green using Warnock Pro Bold Italic Subhead. I'm also going to add a space after the numeral and decrease the tracking to -25 so that my italic drop cap doesn't overlap with the rest of my text. (my drop cap, then, will be two characters wide, including the space character.) [an error occurred while processing this directive] ![]() I'll set up my entry heading as Myriad Pro Semibold with in pink. (Not my favorite color, but it is attention-grabbing, and it complements the background image.) ![]() The body copy will be in Myriad Pro Light in black because I actually want someone to read my sidebar. ![]() And I'll set my end bug to a Zapf Dingbats character. And now I'm almost set. All that's left to do is to define each of these individual elements as character styles. To do this the easy way, open up the Character Styles palette; select one of the styled elements; and click the "Create New Style" button at the bottom of the Character Styles palette. Go through and repeat this for each of the styles. In my case, I will have a total of four. ![]() And now you're ready to incorporate your new character styles into your paragraph style.
