In terms of PDF authoring, InDesign adds a number of new interactive/multimedia features. These include the ability to place video and audio files into InDesign for export to PDF. It also includes the ability to add bookmarks and create interactive buttons for PDF presentations. So, for example, you can add a little page curl graphic to your document, choose the "Convert to Button" option, and set the button to take the reader to the next page when clicked.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]It can also be used to play movies or sounds, open files or launch URLs.

Other improvements and changes that fall roughly into the category of production include:

  • Mixed ink support;
  • DTD support for XML validation;
  • Automation through JavaScript and pain text AppleScript, in addition to previously supported script formats;
  • And the ability to map XML tags to elements.

The one negative comment I have about InDesign CS also falls into the category of new production tools. I refer to the Package for GoLive command. Package for GoLive is a feature that's supposed to help designers repurpose their material for use on the Web, outputting all of the elements from an InDesign document so that they can be brought into a GoLive site for Internet publishing. But it just doesn't work well at all. It's clumsy, time-consuming and imprecise. It works like this: First, you choose the Package for GoLive command from within InDesign; this, then, generates a folder full of elements (no HTML file, by the way); then, within GoLive, you choose the Import from InDesign option and select the folder (not a document); this brings up a window called "Package," from which you then manually drag the elements into your HTML page.

Ugh. What's worse, graphics still need to be optimized individually. And what's even worse, you lose all of your formatting. Elements appear out of order; graphics lose their position; there's no emulation of text wrap; and text switches to whatever default font you've set for your Web page. In other words, after all this, you have to assemble everything manually. Very sad. I assume that most of you are not choosing a page layout application for its Web capabilities; but, if you are holding out some hope for easily repurposing your content, the Package for GoLive function isn't going to cut it for you.
