FEBRUARY 02, 2004 Fire in the Eyes I’ll be the first to admit I’m a comic book geek, and while I tend to favor Batman as the greatest hero, Superman comes in a close second. The WB series Smallville chronicles Clark Kent’s life before donning the red and blue as he discovers his powers and tries to cope in a small Kansas town. Many of the effects in the show are pretty keen, and one that I particularly like is the heat vision effect. In this After Effects exercise, we’ll create a fire in the eye effect that you can use for your next heat vision shot. There really isn’t anything too spectacular about this effect, it combines many of the techniques I have been describing and using over the last couple of years on these pages, but it is the putting it together aspect which makes learning fun. [an error occurred while processing this directive]To begin, you’ll need a shot of an eye, any eye. For this exercise, I downloaded a stock eye shot from Morguefile.com. If you haven’t visited this growing repository, you should check it out, you may just find the image you need for your next project.  Next, we need to create are the flames for the eyes. For this, open Photoshop and create an 800 pixel x 800 pixel file (transparent background), and using the Flame custom shape, create a ring of flames evenly spaced across the canvas.  Tip: In order to get the shapes to line up correctly, create two intersecting guides that divide the canvas window and then using Free Transform, position and align the shapes. You will actually need two shapes to work with, so create another pattern, this time with the flames pointing inward.
