Deformations in Cinema 4D
Bend your heart into shape

Making a simple heart
Of course, a heart candy is fairly simple to make with an extruded spline. See: Rob Garrott's Extrusion Tutorial here.[an error occurred while processing this directive]However, if you want to make a shape that is a little more like a balloon, you might try a few of our handy deformers.

Geometry
To use any deformer, your project needs geometry to effect. We'll start with a simple sphere. I've enlarged my sphere to 145m radius. Additionally, I've dropped it into a Null Object in order to squeeze the z-dimension to .25.

Adding Deformers
Taper Deformer

[taper.gif]
In order to get the pinched bottom of the heart, add a "Taper" deformer. Once you've added it to your scene, you'll notice the bounding box (the light blue line). Also, you'll see an orange dot at the top of the deformer. This orange dot is a control handle, allowing you to shape the deformer by dragging this dot. Note: Each deformer has different control handles depending on their attributes.

To assign the Taper deformation to the sphere, simply drag the Taper object onto the sphere, making it a child of the geometry. Note: Like After Effects filters, the order of the effect is from top to bottom.

You can control the amount of deformation by dragging the orange control dot, or entering a value in the "Strength" parameter in the Attributes window. The greater the strength you apply, the more it will be effected by the deformer. We'll add a Strength = 100%. This tapers the top. In order to taper the bottom, simply rotate the deformer 180% on the x-axis (P). Move the deformer along the Y-axis position, and you'll see the change in effect. Moving it to a value of -50m on the Y-axis produces a smooth curve on the bottom of the geometry.
