After Effects Spline Tricks, Part 2
Keyframing position with masks

Setting up the Effect
1. Create a Black solid and apply LightFactory2. (I'm using the EZ Arc Welder with a scale value of 2).[an error occurred while processing this directive]

2. Change the transfer mode to Screen.

3. Isolate the Light Source Location track in the timeline. Note: An easy way to reveal a single (or few) keyframable tracks in the timeline is to click the stopwatch in the effects control window, then, use the 'U' key to reveal keyframed tracks for the selected layer.

Copy, Paste, Stretch
1. Select the the mask shape keyframe.

2. Copy

3. Select the Light Source Location for LF EZ. (There needn't be an existing keyframe on this track).

4. Paste

This will create our first and last linear keyframe with the roving keyframes in between for a duration of two seconds. Unfortunately, we need four seconds. No problem.

5. Click and drag the end keyframe to the four-second mark. Hold the Shift key to snap movement to the end. Because the keyframes in between the two keyframes are roving, they will automatically spread out. Note: Because these keyframes are based on the vertices of the mask, it may be necessary to edit or delete some of these keyframes to produce a desirable effect.

6. Adding some rotation to the LightFactory effect (Angle) rounds out the effect. I've set one key at the beginning for 2 rotations. One key at the end for 0 rotations. Although the result may not be visible on the web quicktime, you'll notice it in your own comps.

More fun with splines coming to Creative Mac next week, including more Auto-tracking examples.
