JANUARY 27, 2004 After Effects Quick Tip: Mask Colors
5. Now, the part that reads "Default Color (0xAARRGGBB)" = "00ffff00" is the portion that contains the default mask color. The last value there ("00ffff00") is the actual color, expressed in hexadecimal values (in other words, Web colors). Of these, the first two numbers ("00") represent the alpha. Leave that alone. The last six numbers/letters represent the RGB values. All you have to do is insert the hexidecimal value for the color you want. So, for example, if you want the mask color to be pure red, which has a hexidecimal value of FF0000, you'd enter "00FF0000," remembering that the first set of zeroes represents the alpha and should remain as is. For green, whose hexidecimal value is 00FF00, you'd enter "0000FF00." And so on. I'll make mine pure blue, which has a hexidecimal value of 0000FF, so I'll change my value in the prefs file to "000000FF." [an error occurred while processing this directive]And that's it. If you're wondering about how you can determine the hexadecimal value of any given color, it's quite simple. Open up just about any graphics program--such as Adobe Photoshop; go to the Color palette; change the slider type to "Web Color Sliders" (or whatever it's called in your particular program); sample your color; and look at the value displayed.![]() Alternately, there are several programs that are freely available that will allow you to determine hex values for your colors. Check your favorite shareware site for listings. Some of these for Mac OS X include X-Colorz, HeXacolor, ColorWrite and ColorTagGen, among others. After you've made your change, save the prefs file, and then close it. Relaunch After Effects, and voila! ![]() Nothing to it. If you have any further questions, you can contact the authors below.
