DECEMBER 04, 2003 Digital Film Tools 55MM 3.0
Since the effect is displacement-based, you're not always going to get a perfect result right away. But the various tools included with the plugin--some of which are shown above--allow you to make adjustments to the image, the shape, the light, the shadow and the matte to get the most out of the effect. This includes a range of choices for determining where the matte will be extracted from (luminance, hue, saturation, average and individual color channels), how it will be applied (add, subtract, multiply, etc.), the position of the light, its range, its opacity, etc. It'll even give you a matte preview and allow you to make manual adjustments by dragging handles within the ample preview window. Many of these cross over in functionality or offer simple variations on one another, so I don't need to show you all of them. Most of the natural phenomena filters fall into the categories of fogs and glows, with each different filter offering new ways of interpreting the source image to apply the given effect. Otherwise the filters in this category are nearly identical to one another. These include Fog, Mist, Cool Mist, Warm Mist, Black Mist, Glow and Low Contrast. Each one provides essentially the same tools, including the glow type, blending mode, matte characteristics, etc. Below you see the default Glow settings. ![]() Most of these filters also include a subsection allowing you to perform color correction on the image as you apply the base effect. ![]() Now, while I don't have any problem with these particular filters, I do think they are, essentially, one or two outstanding plugins spread out over seven. I think it would be easier for users if these were consolidated into one or two plugins.
