It also adds a feature called Area Type Options (under the Type menu), where you can access several parameters borrowed from InDesign, including columns and rows, gutter and other options. (The Rows and Columns feature was present in previous versions of Illustrator. The new version includes additional options for area text.)

[an error occurred while processing this directive]Other new typographical features include:

• Custom tab leaders for inserting repeating characters within a tab.

• Optical kerning for placing difficult characters in optimal positions, such as in the example below.

• Optical margin alignment, which, when selected, places punctuation over text box and column margins. (Roman hanging punctuation is also available.)

• Enhanced hyphenation and justification settings.

• Text linking enhancements, including the ability to link text on a path to other paths or to text boxes, and vice versa. (You can also now delete a linked text box without deleting the text it contains.)

• The addition of the "Every-Line Composer," which is designed to provide longer documents with optimal text spacing and hyphenation while eliminating rivers. (The Single-Line composer is also available.)

• New options for text on a path, including styles found in InDesign, such as Rainbow (standard), Skew, 3D Ribbon, Stair Step and Gravity.

There are yet more typographical enhancements (such as expanded language support), but we simply can't get into all of them. But, as you can see, the new type features in Illustrator CS are extensive and, in some cases, quite significant.
