The second advantage of the new type engine is that it adds a wealth of new support for OpenType fonts, including OpenType Pro fonts. Within the new OpenType palette in Illustrator CS, there are now one-click buttons (and a flyaway menu) for selecting various OpenType characteristics in fonts that support those characteristics, including everything from contextual alternates to swash characters. [an error occurred while processing this directive]It also provides a Glyphs palette for locating various characters according to characteristic.![]() Illustrator CS ships with more than 100 OpenType and OpenType Pro typefaces. I won't get into them here, but without a doubt some of them have revitalized my interest in fonts, especially some of the delicate display faces in Warnock Pro. I will be writing up a separate article about OpenType in the coming weeks, with particular emphasis on Warnock Pro. It's definitely time to get used to a new font standard. ![]() But that's not all Illustrator CS has in the way of typographical enhancements. Not by any means. Many of the rest of its new typographical features come our way courtesy of Adobe InDesign, with a number of new functions commonly associated with page-layout applications but nevertheless quite useful in a program like Illustrator.
