New typographical enhancements
Far less obvious than the new 3D features of Illustrator CS, but nevertheless at least as important, are the typographical enhancements. Illustrator, of course, has long been known for its typographic capabilities, and I'm unaware of any program that can handle type better than this program. And now it has even more. A lot more.[an error occurred while processing this directive]First off, there's a whole new type engine in Illustrator CS, one that adds two important features to the application. First, it's now interoperable with Adobe Photoshop CS, allowing you to export or copy and paste text between the two applications while retaining type characteristics. The example below shows the type in Illustrator with ligatures, discretionary ligatures and stylistic alternates turned on for Warnock Pro Bold Display and Minion Pro Regular.

When pasted into Photoshop, it retains all of these characteristics.

On top of simple copying and pasting, you can also now export Illustrator documents as Photoshop CS file and maintain text editability and appearance.

When opened within Photoshop CS, the text retains all characteristics--including OpenType characteristics--with each Illustrator text region appearing on its own layer and with transparency preserved.
