Lurker in the Shadows

Finally, change the blending mode of the Original Layer to "Soft Light" or "Pin Light," whichever looks better with your image.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]Now, if there are light portions of your image that have become blown out, you can add an Adjustment Layer to your Original Layer. In my case, the headband in the cowboy hat has all but disappeared.

Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels, and do the opposite of what you did on the Detail Layer. That is, move the middle input slider almost all the way to the right, and this should bring back all of the details that might have been lost in your highlights.

And so, with minimal effort and entirely without any fine manipulation whatsoever, we've brought out the detail in our shadows, kept the detail in our highlights and left the tonal and color range of our image completely intact. And, since we used Adjustment Layers for all of our Levels adjustments, you can easily go back in and make any subtle changes you need. The key is that you've gotten the base manipulation (the hard part) out of the way in essentially four easy steps: duplicating the background layer, a Levels adjustment, a blending mode adjustment and a second Levels adjustment. And all without permanently adjusting your base image at all.
