Lurker in the Shadows
An alternate method for bringing out detail in dark areas of digital photographs

Within this dialog, drag the gray Input Level slider to the left, almost all the way to the edge, until just before the light areas of your image become completely blown out. I'm dragging mine down to 3.40, with the result immediately apparent--a terrible-looking image, but one in which the details in the dark areas become quite visible.

Compositing the Detail Layer
So now we have some pretty good detail in our image. If we were doing this process on a single layer, it would be much more involved, owing to the fact that we'd have to tweak around with levels and curves to get just the right look. But we'll skip those time-consuming details with an easier approach.

In your Layers palette, double-click our original background layer to convert it to a regular layer, and rename it "Original Layer."

Then drag this layer to the top of the stacking order.
