OCTOBER 22, 2003 Autumn Leaves
Now that you've edited the polygons of the plane, you may have something that looks like this. There is no new geometry other than what existed in the default plane. The leaf image is merely a texture. [an error occurred while processing this directive]Blowing the leavesThe easiest method to get 3D leaves to blow across the screen is to use a particle emitter. ![]() Objects > Particle > Emitter. Note: Cinema4D v.8 has a module called Thinking Particles which allows for even more control over the particles through XPresso. The particle emitter will generate streams of objects along the +Z axis. Simply drag the Plane leaf object onto the Emitter object. It becomes a child of the emitter, designating it as a generating object. Drag the other leave onto the emitter. Place the emitter object along one side of the view window and rotate along the Y-axis until the +Z faces the other side of the view window. Change the Emitter's Y-size so that it stretches along the entire side of the view window it occupies. In the emitter's particle attributes, turn on "Show Objects". The leaves are emitting from one side and crossing to the other, but they are only instances, clones of the parent. ![]() Under those same attributes, Speed and Rotation will create a better illusion of blowing, especially when using the "Variation" values. After changing some of the parameters, the difference is obvious. ![]() Multiplying the emitters will allow you to create variations of gusts. Additionally, you could use a particle Wind object to make your leaves jump at a certain location. The Ringer Sometimes you may experience gaps in the clusters of leaves that you'll need to patch up. If this is the case, you can render one rotating leaf, or variations to fill the holes. Render all of your 3D animations with an Alpha Channel. You can find the file format in Render Settings > Save. If you decide to use QuickTime, make sure you have the appropriate codec to carry the alpha. I'll use Animation+.
