7. Use the Paint Bucket tool to refill the layer with black. Then switch colors to white, and use whatever tool you wish to use to define where within your button the asset will be visible.

If, for your own education, you'd like to know what you just did, choose Image > Reveal All, and you'll see that Photoshop is actually hiding the true dimensions of our mask layer within the smaller dimensions of the image's canvas size. This way, you get the advantage of a large mask without having a large button.

If you have chosen to Reveal All, you'll now have to undo this step to hide the true dimensions of the Mask layer. Do not, under any circumstances, crop the image, or you'll lose all the work you've just done.

After you've saved your file, import your new button into DVD Studio Pro in the Shapes palette.

Apply your button, and then drag your asset into it.

And voila! The button on the left in the example below uses the technique we just discussed, while the button on the right shows the asset in a wider view using a standard mask. Same button, same asset, different mask.

In our next installment in this series, we'll take a look at an alternate method for creating more general-purpose zoom masks. In the meantime, if you have any questions, be sure to visit me in the DVD Studio Pro forum here.
