Painting and rotoscoping with alphas
So now you're ready to get started with the actual work. But there are still some things you have to keep in mind. Studio Artist includes brushes that handle alphas in two different ways: one that supports alphas and one that doesn't. In order to paint, rotoscope or animate with proper alpha channel output, you must use a brush that's alpha-enabled--and this includes brushes used in canvas movies, movie streams or PASeqs.[an error occurred while processing this directive]So how do you know which brushes are alpha-enabled? First of all, Studio Artist 2.0 shipped with about 500 alpha-enabled preset brushes, located on the original installation CD. They're called "Dave's Alpha Enabled Presets" (named for the handsome and intelligent man who created them). Simply drop the entire folder into your Studio Artist/Presets directory, and they'll show up the next time you launch your program.

Alternately, you can convert any existing brush into an alpha-enabled brush in one of two ways. First, you can select Edit > Paint Synthesizer > MacroEdit > Make Alpha Paint. Or you can go into the Paint Synthesizer and set your brush alpha application manually. Why would you want to use this second option? The Paint Synthesizer provides a few variations on how alphas are applied, and you might like some of the options better than others, depending on the base preset you're using to create your alpha-enabled brush.

To do this, select the preset you want to use, and then go into the Paint Synthesizer. Select the Paint Fill Apply parameter, and there you'll see all of your alpha settings down at the bottom. The settings you see below use the default values provided by the "Make Alpha Paint" MacroEdit command discussed above.
