SEPTEMBER 30, 2003 A Glimpse at Glints
Part 3: Adding more stuff There are several things you can add to the light pass to make it stand out from a boring wipe that gets thrown on with a switcher; here are a few:[an error occurred while processing this directive]Fractal Noise A plugin that you may have overlooked in your PB is fractal noise. There are also third-party noise generators that you can add to your color glint layer that will break up the uniformity of the beam of light. (Note: The Fractal Noise plugin has a transfer mode. It defaults to "normal". Because fractal noise in AE is black and white, this will change the color of your glint. Choose a transfer mode that suits your project.) Visible Light Okay, so there isn't an easy button for volumetric light in AE, but you can make your own with a few mattes and some creative pinning. Lens Flares Knoll Lens Flare is an dramatic way to pop hints of reflection as the light crosses your subject. One of the nice things about this plug-in is that it is customizable down to each element in the flare / reflection / refraction. The other nice part about this plug is the ability to customize the colors of the elements and save out all of your favorites. Of course, there's an "EZ" option, allowing for an instant setup (the EZ version has a few dozen variations to choose from). To get Knoll Lens Flare Pro: Red Giant Software Don't leave your glint simple. There are hundreds of tools at your disposal within the standard version of After Effects. Furthermore, if you have Cinema 4D, try implementing buffer channels or multiple renders to really bend your light path. Because this is a creative process, there is no "one" way. This is just a starting point to help you start thinking about how you might create your own similar light effects. Check out DMN and CreativeMac for various other tutorials that might help you with similar or complementary effects. Or subscribe to the newsletter to find out what's new each week. Of course, you can always visit your favorite DMN Forum and request a specific tutorial. Special thanks to AK-Jake for this week's request. Ko Maruyama is a freelance compositor who blah blah blah.
