SEPTEMBER 29, 2003 Up Close with the Adobe Creative Suite
In terms of new and improved functionality outside of workflow, InDesign CS gains a new Measure tool, which behaves like the tool of the same name from Photoshop and Illustrator, with measurements appearing in the info palette. It also adds Pathfinder commands for converting multiple objects into a single object, with options similar to those found in Illustrator. These include Exclude Overlap, Add, Subtract, Intersect and Minus Back.[an error occurred while processing this directive]A new Stroke Style Editor allows users to create and select new stroke styles, including precise and visual placement of individual dots, dashes, gaps and other parameters. ![]() ![]() For tables, InDesign CS adds the ability to create running headers and footers, so tables that span multiple text frames will display the same header and footer information. One or more rows can be assigned as header or footer rows, and InDesign automatically adds these to any multi-frame table and automatically adjusts them when the tables reflow. It also supports heading rows assigned in Microsoft Word and RTF files. ![]() Text wrap is also enhanced in the new version. It adds the ability to suppress text wrap on hidden layers when multiple versions of a composition are being created within a single document. It also adds options to select which objects text wrap affects: the objects directly beneath the text wrap or all objects in the stacking order. And finally, in terms of functionality improvements, it also adds support for nested styles. This feature allows you to define complex text attributes defined as multiple character styles and then apply them as paragraph styles, along with options to define how they're applied (sentences, words, characters, digits, letters or special characters). You can also specify the number of elements to which a nested style will be applied and embed multiple styles to control the appearance of various elements. InDesign CS also gains numerous output, export and integration features, especially in the area of PDF. InDesign CS gains enhanced PDF output with the ability to save to multiple Adobe Acrobat versions, save PDF layers and export to PDF/X-1A and PDF/X-3. PDF export also includes options to add bookmarks, embed movies and sounds and add interactive navigation buttons. ![]() For integration, InDesign gains moderately enhanced support for Photoshop files, including the ability to place and separate multi-tone PSD files and PSD and TIFF files that contain spot channels. For GoLive integration, it gains several enhancements, including the ability to create GoLive packages. This feature allows you to export document components and then import them into GoLive CS, using a new viewer to drag and drop the elements into a Web layout. It also adds image conversion and generates cascading style sheets from text styles. Other new features include:
