SEPTEMBER 29, 2003 Up Close with the Adobe Creative Suite
ImageReady CS Like its big brother, Photoshop, the oft-neglected ImageReady also underwent some major transformations in its new CS incarnation. Since it's a Web-centric application, almost all of its changes are Internet-related, although it also gains tighter Photoshop integration with the ability to swap files faster. It also shares Photoshop's new CPU optimizations for increased performance on G4, G5 and Pentium processors.[an error occurred while processing this directive]One of the new features in ImageReady is its ability to export to the Flash format. What's more, it exports individual layers as .swf files, which can then be imported into Macromedia's Flash authoring environment as Flash layers. ImageReady also preserves exported text and vector objects as Flash text and vectors, though it can also preserve the appearance of files by rasterizing objects. It will also generate HTML files for Flash exports. ![]() Aside from exporting layers to the .swf format, it can export layers to other graphics formats and also output individual states and generate multiple HTML files for each state. The new version adds a Web Content palette, which includes pick whip functionality for targeting individual elements. It can also create multiple slice sets and layer comps for creating a variety of document layouts. And it also allows users to make individual slices invisible without deleting them. ![]() For data-driven graphics, ImageReady CS adds data set functionality, with the ability to import data from a spreadsheet or tab-delimited text file, as well as various output options. These include outputting one image or set of slices from each data set and the ability to add dynamic text through variables for ImageReady SWF output. It also offers conditional options for actions based on image characteristics. Finally, ImageReady also receives a general interface overhaul geared more toward its primary purpose, the creation of Web graphics. This includes the ability to select, manipulate and group multiple objects on the canvas; create nested object groups (up to five levels deep); execute commands over multiple layers; and modify multiple text objects simultaneously. It also offers Smart Guides for easier positioning of small objects (like buttons) within a composition. ImageReady CS will be available in the fourth quarter for Mac OS X and Windows bundled with Photoshop CS.
