In the area of workflow, there are too many enhancements to cover, so I'll hit on the major ones. First, it offers a new feature called Layer Comps, which allows you to save variations on a design to a separate palette, so that your variations don't have to be managed within the Layers palette. This feature records any combination of layers, modes, effects, etc. and stores them away for later recall. Comps can be saved along with the master file or output as individual images. It can also output a series of comps as a multi-page PDF file. (More on Photoshop's new PDF features later.)

[an error occurred while processing this directive]As for the Layers palette itself, it too gains some modifications, including the ability to nest layer sets within layer sets, with support for nesting up to five layers deep. These nested layer sets will also be recognized in Illustrator CS.

The enhanced File Browser is designed to function, in Adobe's words, as a "digital imaging hub." It includes support for flags, keywords and editable metadata; batch processing without opening the images directly; adjustable thumbnail sizes; an adjustable interface; the ability to choose whether to view raster and/or vector-based documents; an enhanced Preview pane; and the ability to toggle the File Browser to full-screen mode.

And for creative workflow, it also includes a new always-on floating histogram palette.

Other new workflow and general features include:

  • The ability to export layers as documents;
  • Customizable keyboard shortcuts--a feature users have been demanding for years;
  • The ability to save Histories as external History Logs and as metadata attached to individual files;
  • Support for images up to 300,000 x 300,000 with up to 56 channels per file;
  • Enhanced scripting;
  • A customizable Help menu;
  • And the new ability to create multi-page PDF presentations directly from Photoshop files, including optional page transitions.

That's not all. It also includes additional Paint Engine parameters and numerous Web enhancements vis a vis the included ImageReady CS application, which we'll cover in the next section.

Photoshop CS will be available in the fourth quarter for Mac OS X and Windows for $499, with upgrades running $169.
