SEPTEMBER 29, 2003 Up Close with the Adobe Creative Suite
Video professionals haven't been left out either. Aside from 16-bit color depth support, Photoshop CS includes a number of enhancements designed specifically for creating images destined for video. It offers new support for non-square pixel aspect ratios, with a variety of presets for common formats, as well as customizability for fine-tuning the aspect ration. It also includes the ability to preview the image as it will appear on the screen with a command called Pixel Aspect Ratio Correction. And it also includes automatic generation of title and action safety markers. [an error occurred while processing this directive]In the area of new tools, Photoshop CS introduces a feature called "Match Color." If you've ever tried to create a color map in Photoshop, you know the hoops you had to jump through to accomplish it: Convert your source image to indexed color, generate a color palette from it, convert your target image to indexed color and then apply the color map, all the while scrunching up your image to a total of eight bits for the privilege. The new version, however, lets you simply take an image and apply its color to another image (or portion of an image) to match colors easily, an especially useful feature for compositors working with files that were shot under different lighting conditions and that would otherwise require a lot of color correction time. This new feature, Adobe tells me, was developed by the same team that came up with the Healing tools introduced in Photoshop 7.It also includes Highlight/Shadow, which allows you to make exposure adjustments to bring out details in over- and under-exposed areas of an image. This, of course, has been possible through Curves and Levels adjustments in previous versions, but the new Shadow/Highlight function makes the process far less painful. And the intelligent algorithms built into this feature help to bring out details that might seem to have been completely missing from the image. Photoshop CS also includes support for text on a path and text within a shape. Text remains fully editable, even when exporting to Illustrator CS. Other new tools include:
For effects, it includes a new feature called Lens Blur, which allows highlights in an image to take on the shape of a simulated lens aperture. It also includes a set of Photo Filters for simulating the appearance of photographic lens filters. And speaking of effects, Photoshop CS incorporates a new Filter Gallery feature, which allows you to preview the effects of a filter on an image, along with the ability to preview an entire string of filters to show their cumulative effect before they're ever applied to an image. It even includes a resizable Preview pane for getting up close with the image.
