Creating Paint-On Effects in Synthetik Studio Artist
Recording brush strokes as movies while you paint

3. Now choose File > Preferences > Movie Stream Write Frame Flags > Write Frame Each Action and Write Frame Each Subaction. These two settings tell Studio Artist to record not only your finished stroke, but the steps leading up to the finished stroke as well, which is how you create the paint-on effect.

You will, of course, notice a decrease in performance, since Studio Artist is now outputting 30 to 60 frames per second while you draw. But if you've selected one of the faster codecs (such as "None," the performance drop won't be severe. A few of notes on drawing using this method:

  • Studio Artist only writes a frame when you're drawing, so don't worry about hurrying through the process. If you stop, the recording pauses. So the time you spend changing colors, switching brushes and altering parameters has no effect on the outcome.
  • You can manually enter frames by typing Command-F. This will help to create pauses or additional lead-in frames at the beginning of your movie. (Remember, at 60 FPS, you'll need to hit Command-F an awful lot of times for a pause!)
  • You can also record pause frames by drawing around the edges of your canvas or in inconspicuous places.
  • Finally, when you're drawing, take it a little bit slow so that the brush has a chance to apply itself without skipping frames. You'll get used to it the more you try.

6. When you're done, make absolutely sure you choose File > Close Stream. Otherwise you're hosed, and your movie will be ruined forever.

You are now finished with your write-on effect.
