Extrusions in Maxon's Cinema 4D
Part 1: Working with Adobe Illustrator files

Go to the OBJECTS menu, then select Nurbs, and then select Extrude Nurb from the pull down. In the object manager, Drag the spline group on top of the Extrude Nurb object--don't be alarmed if nothing happens!--then select the Extrude Nurb object, and in the attribute manager check the "Hierarchical" button.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]Pow! You now have an extruded word, but hold on! Notice that the compound letters that I pointed out in figure 7 didn't cut out like they were supposed to.

Now, if you use the "Connect Splines" option, using the Illustrator file in figure 6, you get the result shown in figure 9.

Note that you now have a separate spline for each letter in the word "bendingpixels," but all of the compound letters have been properly cut out when you use the same Extrude Nurb object with the "Hierarchical" button checked.

I personally always use the "connect splines" option and break up the Illustrator file into separate files to manually create the groups that are most desirable for each particular project.

So now you know how to get the splines from Illustrator to Cinema 4D. In the next tutorial, we'll talk a little about the Extrude Nurb object and its options.

Happy pixel bending!
