Happy Little Things
Cmd-B is the keyboard shortcut for paint. (No, it couldn't be "B" (begin work area).)[an error occurred while processing this directive]Cmd-Drag changes the size of your brush dynamically before painting a new brush stroke. Not fast enough, Cmd-Shift-Drag gets you a really big or small brush lickety split.

After you Cmd-Drag the size of your brush, release the Cmd key, while maintaining the drag, and you'll edit the feather of the brush ("hardness"). You'll see the palette icon update, as well as a cursor update (inner circle).

To view the Paint Effects only for the selected Layer in your comp, press the "P" twice on your keyboard.

Did I mention you can paint on transparent as well--of course you knew that.

The brethren tools are Clone and Erase. More on that from DMN later.

More Paint options? Are there more brushes? Can you paint with spline shapes? It is possible to paint on the individual color channels without splitting out the channels first? No, not yet, but Steve's team isn't done with paint yet. I wouldn't be surprised to see more an more options trickle in from Photoshop soon.

In the next installments I'll take a look at actually animating a paint animation, using masks to create the paint shapes, and plugins that take advantage of paint animation. There's a cool new plugin coming up from Digital Anarchy which may release as soon as IBC. I've been playing with it for a couple of weeks and hope to get a tutorial up before the Amsterdam convention.
