One thing you might be wondering is how to create a semi-transparent shape for your button. DVD Studio Pro will not recognize any opacity settings you apply to a layer in Photoshop, so you have to fudge this one. Here's the trick.

1. Create a new, blank layer, and move it below your Shape layer.[an error occurred while processing this directive]2. Set the opacity of your SHape layer to whatever you want in the Layers palette.
3. Merge your Shape layer into your new layer (by selecting the flyaway menu in the Layers palette and choosing "Merge Down").

The Icon layer
Next up is the Icon layer, which is created for your reference only. When you import your file into DVD Studio Pro, this layer will represent your button in your Custom Shapes palette. Do whatever you want with it, as it won't affect your DVD composition at all. Note that if you don't want to create an icon for your button, do not create this layer at all, as it can lead to trouble if it's blank. For my icon, I'm simply pasting my base image into the Icon layer. Here's how it looks in the Custom Shapes palette.

The Highlight layer
Your Highlight layer is actually a highlight mask layer. That is, it defines which areas of your button will be highlighted and which will not. SImple buttons, like the ones we're creating in this tutorial, use only one highlight color, defined in your button's Color Settings tab in the Button palette within DVD Studio Pro. Id doesn't matter whether what color you use to define your highlight area. For the sake of simplicity, in this example I'm reversing out my base Shape image to use as a highlight mask. The combinations of black, white and grays will not affect anything as far as the highlight goes. As far as DVD Studio Pro is concerned, the highlights are defined by transparent or non-transparent pixels.
