Creating a wavy flag effect for use in motion graphics

Answer 1. In order to correct the polygonal angles, we can simply add a HyperNURBS and drop the Plane and wind into it. Another route would be to change the segments on the Plane, but that leads to a less ergonomic editorial workflow (with and without HyperNURBS active).

Why not use Cel Shading instead? Because the object only has the illusion of being broken into pieces by the alpha channel. The Cel Shader sees the true geometry and renders the whole plane, unless you use Illumination, in which case you're back to square one. (Note: You can use cel shading after you add the ambient light because the default light will have been cancelled out.)

All that's left is to add a little camera move and render.

Then you just bring the rendered footage into your motion graphics package. In After Effects, this can be applied as a track matte to color or even footage in order to achieve a wipe through a dissolve.
