JULY 21, 2003 Distorto: Warp Effects in After Effects 6.0
There are several types of fractal displacement available to start from. Additional parameters include Amount, Size, Offset, Complexity, Evolution (including random seed values) and last, but most important, Pinning. [an error occurred while processing this directive]Pinning is important because it can ensure that your layer does not pull away from the edges of the original position when applying the effect. In some instances you may want the effect to take over the shape of the entire layer. ![]() Wave Warp The last of the new Distortion Effects is Wave Warp. Wave Warp is an excellent tool with many subtle uses reaching beyond mere sine-wave distortion of the layer. ![]() The default settings of Wave Warp produce a Non-Pinned sine wave. There are several different wave types to select from. All of the wave types produce a smeary distortion of the original layer, with the exception of the Square wave. Square waves produce an effect similar to a default Jaws transition. It seems the Phase affects the Square wave differently from the the way it changes other formulas. In reality, phase over a wave is the same variable, but square waves give the appearance of a moving transition through the image. ![]() Duplicating the Square Wave Warp produces some strange chopped-up pieces that come together in some excellent ways. ![]() And finally, all of these distortion effects run on continuously rasterizing layers without precomposing. Here is an Illustrator image with a couple of the new distortion effects applied. There are surprisingly few keyframes. The blurry image is a result of the distortion, and not the effect of a rasterizing image. Ko Maruyama is a freelance animator who occasionally warps his children. Any distortion is generally left to the skills of their grandparents. Ko's fondness for the effects found under the distort category will result in several tutorials and reviews yet to come.
