MAY 21, 2003 Fasten Your Seatbelts; It's Going To Be a Bumpy Night
Now we need to create our BLACK AND WHITE IMAGE to use as the Displacement Map. Let's make a separate solid. Called BUMP.[an error occurred while processing this directive]On this layer, let's make two separate masks. In the tool palette, select the oval mask (Q), if it's rectangular, press (Q) twice. Drag a mask in the center of your layer. Again, let's make the second mask. In the timeline, reveal the Mask properties. You can twirl down the properties, or type (M). (MM) will give you all of the Mask properties. We only need to change the mode of the inner mask to SUBTRACT. ![]() Let's select MASTER layer. Add the DISPLACEMENT MAPPING effect. EFFECT > DISTORT > DISPLACEMENT MAPPING. With a quick understanding of requirements #1, #2 and #4 of this plugin, we know that #1 = our BUMP layer. The plugin selects itself as the Displacement Map Layer. If this isn't the layer you want, simply select the correct layer from the pull-down menu in the plugin, or select NONE for now. #2 and #4 are the CHANNELS that we want to use as controls for displacement, because our image is going to be black and white, let's change the channel designation to LUMINANCE. Now that we have assigned BUMP as the displacement map layer in the effect, we can turn its visibility off to see the result. ![]() NOTHING happens to our MASTER layer because the perceived image is only clipped. It's still just a white solid, no alpha; it goes all the way to the edge of our comp with some masks to clip the image. WE NEED TO PRECOMP. (LAYER > PRECOMPOSE) Let's name our PRECOMP "BUMP_PC," move all the attributes to the new comp, AND open it.
