Displacement and bump mapping in Adobe After Effects

Let's begin.[an error occurred while processing this directive]I'm including footage files at the end; so there are no imported images in this tutorial. You can create those yourself. Instead, I'm going to use a filter called GRID to show the effects. Grid isn't necessary for Displacement Mapping, but without an image to displace, you won't notice any change in the layer's pixel configuration.

First, let's make a new solid. This could also be imported footage. (I've found that if the imported footage contains too much camera movement, the effect isn't always evident, or as impressive.) The new solid will be called MASTER. I'm going to put a grid on it so it becomes visible. EFFECT > RENDER > GRID. Changing the background to black and the grid color to green should do it.

Let's take a look at the variations available to a DISPLACEMENT MAP by way of the plugin.

It asks for the following:

1. A Displacement layer: This is the layer that will determine which pixels will be moved, and, with animation, where they will be moved. (Our BUMP - or DISPLACEMENT map)

2. Use For Horizontal: This is the CHANNEL of the layer which will effect the horizontal movement of the pixels.

3. Max Horizontal Displacement: Distance which the pixels on the effected layer will be moved by.

4. Use for Vertical: This is the CHANNEL of the layer which will effect the vertical movement of the pixels.

5. Max Horizontal Displacement: Distance which the pixels on the effected layer will be moved by.

6. Displacement Map Behavior: The attitude the map will have in relationship to the effected layer. (Center / Fit / Tile)

7. Edge Behavior: Wrapping on/off.
