MARCH 07, 2003 Here Comes the Sun In the last installment, we looked at how image sequences can be generated when the images themselves won’t import into After Effects so we could create a rotating sun. While the solution worked, there was still the problem of being able to composite the footage over other layers. In this After Effects Production Bundle tutorial, I’ll show you how to take care of the corona issue as well as create your own Sun from scratch. First let’s deal with the corona and flare issue we had at the end of the last exercise. Because of the way the image sequence was compressed, pulling a decent composite was going to be quite difficult.[an error occurred while processing this directive]The simple solution is to use a circular mask. If you haven’t done so already, create a Pre-Comp from all of the Sun images you downloaded from SOHO. This will allows us to treat the Sun sequence as a single layer. From the Tools Palette select the Oval Mask Tool and in the Comp Window draw out a mask that encompasses the Sun disk, but excludes the flares, mass ejections, and corona. HINT: You can create a perfect circle by holding down the Shift key as you click and drag the mask. You may need to do some fine-tuning to your mask as the sun is not a perfect sphere but rather slightly squashed. The end result should look something like the following.
Not too dramatic now, but we’ll be able to correct that in the next installment. For now, let’s look at a way to create our own rotating Sun using the Production Bundle of After Effects. This will be a somewhat stylized Sun that is slightly darker than the image sequence.
