Customizing iDVD 3, Part 1
How to add your own button presets

Now open up your five image files in your favorite image editor. I'll be using Adobe Photoshop for this tutorial.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]We'll begin with the most important of these, Formal.Shape.tif. This is the graphic that actually appears as the button in your iDVD presentation. Here you'll draw the visible portion of your button border. When you work on it, keep these six things in mind:

1. Do not resize the canvas.
2. Do not change the format from TIFF.
3. Do not save the file with more than one layer.
4. Make sure your final layer has transparency (do not "flatten" the image).
5. Make sure the one remaining layer when you're done is still called "Layer 0."
6. If you receive a "TIFF Options" dialog when saving your final artwork, make sure you don't change any compression settings.

So, for example, I'll take the original frame artwork from the Formal button shape file (Formal.Shape.tif), delete it, and replace it with some graphics that include layer styles, a little typography, etc.

Then, in the Photoshop Layers palette, I'll choose the flyaway menu and select "Merge Visible." This will rasterize all of my effects and type and merge everything onto a single layer while still maintaining transparency.

Got it? I'm not going to go too much into technique here, since everybody will want to create different custom buttons for themselves.

So now let's move on to the mask file, known as "Formal.Mask.tif." This is much more simple, since all we're doing is modifying a black and white image with nothing more than a background layer. To start, I'm simply going to fill in the whole thing with black.

Then I'm going to select the area through which my files will show (using the Lasso tool in Photoshop) and hit my Delete key to make that area white.

Now I'll save the file, and I'm done with it.
