In the new tools category, Mask Pro 3 also includes a Chisel tool and a Blur tool. Chisel allows you to go in and literally chisel away at any edges that might remain after the initial mask is created. The images below show a portion of our tiger before and after the Chisel tool is applied.

After Chisel.

The Blur tool, by contrast, expands out any edges in your subject so that they can be blended better with your composite. Below you see our tiger comped into a jungle scene without any blurring.

Note how, especially around the whiskers, the image looks pasted on. But below, you see how the Blur tool helps to reduce this effect.

Now, obviously, there will still be some compositing work left to do after this, but the blur tool at least gets the pixels mixed together well. You can deal with lighting, focal length effects and tonality later within Photoshop itself.

Other tools within the Mask Pro 3 environment include:

  • Paintbrush and airbrush tools for manually masking elements of the images;
  • A Paint Bucket tool for eliminating contiguous pixels for easy removal of large areas of the image;
  • A manual Pen tool;
  • And navigation tools like Zoom and Move.
