The Pen Mode parameter
But you can also adjust the behavior of some of these modes in the Pen Mode parameter within the Paint Synthesizer. Of course, every parameter, subparameter and option in the Paint Synthesizer affects the appearance of your stroke. But within the Pen Mode parameter, there are specific options for Autodraw mode, Particle Paint and Region Draw modes. (Multipen has its own entiure set of separate options, which we'll look at next time.) Let's take a look at them.[an error occurred while processing this directive]For Autodraw mode, you have two subparameters: Scan Spacing and Stroke Update. Scan Spacing, simply enough, adjusts the distance between scans when using an Autodraw pen. Below you'll see examples of an Autodraw Interactive pen with various spacing options.

Spacing at 0, producing a continuous stream of scans as the stroke is drawn.

Spacing at 30.

Spacing at 100.

The other subparameter--Stroke Update--has two options: Each Subpath and MouseUp. This has to do with the program's undo buffer, and, frankly, I've never seen a difference between either setting.

For the Particle Pen Mode, you again have two subparameters: # Particle and Action Reset. The # Particle setting literally determines the number of particles as you draw. Set it to 40, and you'll have 40 particles drawing themselves on your canvas. Set it to 2, and you'll have two particles at any one time. Here's a quick movie illustrating 40 particles in a stroke.
