JANUARY 09, 2003 Film Gimp in an X11 World
Install X11 And, finally, we come to the easiest step of the bunch, installing Apple's brand new X11. What is X11? Well, to answer this question in a non-Unixy way, it's simply a graphical user interface for running Unix on the Mac. It works and looks a lot like Mac OS X on the surface and makes life a lot nicer for those of you who hate ugly interfaces. Think of it as Classic or Virtual PC: It's just another operating system running on top of Mac OS X, but a lot smoother and prettier.[an error occurred while processing this directive]To install X11, locate the file on your Desktop called X11UserForMacOSX.dmg. Double-click it to mount it as a disk image on your Desktop. The mounted volume will be called X11 User for Mac OS X. Open it up, and double-click the file called X11UserForMacOSX.mpkg. Follow the installation instructions, and, as always, read the warnings. ![]() When it's done installing, you will find an application called X11 located in your Applications folder. ![]() Using the software Now, all things being installed, you can now launch X11 and start using Film Gimp. To do this, double-click the X11 application within your Applications folder. This will launch X11 and another application within X11 called xterm. This is the X11 version of the Terminal. On the first line in the xterm window, type filmgimp and hit the Return key. This will launch the Film Gimp application and allows you to start working. ![]() ![]() As a word of warning, save often when using Film Gimp, whether you're using X11 or any other windowing system for Unix. It will be good for you to get to know this program now, even if it's not really fully ready for use as a stable application. As it develops, we'll be bringing you tutorials, plugins and addons for this program. And we'll be bringing you updates on its use and/or installation as things change. You can also update individual pieces of software within X11 through the xterm terminal window. For example, to update Fink, type fink selfupdate-cvs and hit the Return key. When that's done, type fink update-all followed by the Return key. You can also look for and install new Film Gimp updates by typing fink update filmgimp followed by the Return key.
