JANUARY 09, 2003 Film Gimp in an X11 World
Install some of the software After all these downloads, your Desktop now looks like a confusing entanglement of compressed files, installers, folders, disk images and mouinted disk images. But don't be put off by it. After we install these things, you'll be able to trash all of those files. Here's the order in which we're going to do this.[an error occurred while processing this directive]1. We're going to install XDarwin first. XDarwin will seem confusing to most of you reading this article because it seems to refer to itself alternately as XFree86 and XDarwin. Don't worry about it. After you install this thing, you shouldn't ever have to look at it again. On your Desktop, you'll see a file called XInstall. This will install XDarwin 4.2.0. Double-click the file, and follow the instructions. ![]() 2. When this is done, locate the folder on your Desktop called XFree86_4.2.1.1. This folder contains the updater for XDarwin. Open the folder and launch the application called XFree86_4.2.1.1. Follow the instructions during the installation. There's nothing complicated about this. ![]() 3. Next, locate the file called Fink_0.5.0a-Installer.dmg. This is a disk image file. Double-clicking this file will mount a volume on your hard drive called Fink 0.5.0a Installer. (This volume may already be mounted, depending on your browser's download preferences.) Mount this image, and then double-click on the mounted volume. There you'll find a file called Fink 0.5.0a Installer.pkg. Double-click this file to start the Fink installation process. ![]() You're now ready to go in and configure Fink, the details of which appear below.
