In terms of workflow, Cleaner 6 also gains some much-needed improvements. First and foremost is the new Watch Folder feature, which allows Cleaner to monitor a folder anywhere on the network and begin encoding as soon as a new file appears in this folder.

[an error occurred while processing this directive] Destinations and settings--even multiple settings--are applied to the folder as a whole, so that you can, for example, batch output from Final Cut Pro to MPEG-2, QuickTime and Windows Media in succession without moving a muscle and output to custom locations. (See below.)

Which brings up another nifty enhancement in Cleaner 6: the ability to specify multiple output formats and codecs in a single visit to the Settings dialog. You can Shift- or Command-select any number of the presets that ship with Cleaner 6 to specify multiple outputs, or select any number of user-defined presets.

By clicking the "Apply" button with multiple selections (as seen above), Cleaner automatically places the output list in the Batch window and encodes them sequentially.

And, of course, with QuickTime files, it can also output multiple "alternative" versions for users on various bandwidths and processors.

Other performance and workflow improvements include:

  • Includes more than 150 presets designed by professional users;
  • Presets can be duplicated and (optionally) renamed, then modified and saved, with the ability to create custom folders directly within the application;
  • Some encoding options become available directly from within editing applications like Final Cut Pro;
  • Output can be sent to a network or streaming media or FTP server directly;
  • Contextual menus for accessing settings and other functions in Cleaner 6;
  • An option to toggle between left/right previews and A/B previews.

Custom destinations can include specific folders or locations on an FTP server.

Settings and other functions can be accessed through contextual menus.

The Dynamic Preview window provides an option for left/right previews or A/B toggles.
