SEPTEMBER 24, 2002 FTP in Mac OS X 10.2
Setting up the server Setting up an FTP server is so simple that it might not even be worth mentioning, except that I also want to show you how to work with the Mac's FTP server feature behind a firewall. So here goes the two-step FTP server setup in Mac OS X. [an error occurred while processing this directive] 1. Open up System Preferences, and click on the "Sharing" icon.
2. In the Services pane, check "FTP Access."
That's all. FTP from behind a firewall Now, since many of you have personal firewalls, you need to know how to set up your firewall to allow your Mac's FTP server to be accessed from the outside. This is less simple and depends somewhat on the firewall you're using. I'm assuming you have a firewall built into your Ethernet hub/switch to allow you to connect multiple machines on your local network to the Internet. If you are, you need to tell that firewall how to deal with incoming FTP requests. So first, open up your System Preferences again and click on your Network icon. Located there is your machine's IP address and your router's IP address, both of which you'll need for this procedure.
