SEPTEMBER 19, 2002 Alien Skin Image Doctor
The last filter in the collection--Scratch Remover--does do what it purports to do, namely remove scratches in images. And it can do it quite well, if you put enough time into it. But unlike the first two filters, Scratch Remover requires a lot of personal attention, and it requires you to work on very small portions of a scratch at a time in order to get the desired result.

In the before and after above, I found myself having to select tiny portions of each scratch in order to get the filter to work correctly. But even then, I wasn't sure I couldn't have done an equally mediocre job using Photoshop's Clone Stamp tool or Healing Brush. The bottom line I'm a huge fan of two of the filters in the Image Doctor suite--Smart Fill and Spot Lifter. I also appreciate the interface of all the Image Doctor filters, which is taken directly from the interface introduced with Eye Candy 4000. Namely, each filter has its own editing menu, filter menu, presets menu, etc. The interface makes working with this package simple and efficient. On the negative side, I'm not a fan of Scratch Remover or JPEG Repair. But, as I say, the first two filters are worth the price alone. And so I give Image Doctor a Buy recommendation. Image Doctor is available for Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and Windows for $129. It requires Adobe Photoshop or a compatible host, including Macromedia Fireworks. Users of any other current Alien Skin package can get Image Doctor for $99. For more information, visit http://www.alienskin.com.
