Spot Lifter
Also in the category of incredible is the Spot Lifter filter. This filter is what Photoshop 7's Healing Brush wishes it could be. Take a look at the before and after shots below. [an error occurred while processing this directive]

Now, like the Smart Fill filter, Spot Lifter is as easy to apply as anything. Just make your selection, choose the filter from the filter menu, and you're done. What's more important than the simplicity though is the quality. Spot Lifter doesn't just blur the texture of the image. It interpolates it and leaves the texture alone while doing just what it's meant to do, namely remove spots. If fact, if you put those before and after shots one on top of another and switch back and forth between them, what should strike you is that the freckles in the before shot look like an overlay when compared with the after shot. I mean, it really leaves everything alone--even pores and wrinkles--except the blemishes, and I just don't know how it does it.

The other two filters
For my money, the Spot Lifter and Smart Fill filters are worth the price of the Image Doctor package alone. And, obviously, I'm a big fan of these two filters. The other two filters in the collection--JPEG Repair and Scratch Remover--are not nearly as impressive, though they might be useful for some of you.

JPEG Repair is a filter that attempts to cure images that have been diseased by by JPEG overcompression. It removes artifacts, blurs image edges and adds noise, where appropriate. Unlike the Smart Fill, however, there are no miracles going on with this filter. An overcompressed JPEG image is a lost cause, and no amount of filtering is going to bring it back. However, the JPEG Repair filter in Image Doctor will enhance an image a little bit, though not enough for my liking. In fact, the differences between the original image and the "repaired" image are quite negligible. None of the images I worked on with this filter showed any marked improvement.
