AUGUST 08, 2002 Creating Photomosaics in Studio Artist
Basics: Using the Photomosaic preset For the second step of this process, we need to create a Preset that uses our new "movie brush" to generate the mosaic. For those of you who have never used Studio Artist's Paint Synthesizer, this is not the easiest way to start because no matter which Preset you start with, you're going to have to do a lot of tweaking. To save you some time, I've created a "base" photomosaic plugin, which you can download here. (If you want t create your own, skip ahead to the next section.) [an error occurred while processing this directive] Once you've downloaded this plugin, create a new folder in your Studio Artist/Presets/Default folder called "Photomosaics." Drop this plugin into that folder and choose Edit > Preset > Reload Presets, or simply quit and relaunch Studio Artist. Then choose the this new Preset from your list of available Presets. After--and only after--you've selected this "Photomosaic1" Preset, choose File > Paint Synth > New Movie Brush. (Alternately, you might get an error message telling you that the original movie brush file can't be found, which is logical since it's sitting here on my hard drive. So just click OK and load the movie file you've created.)
When the dialog appears, choose the movie brush that we created earlier. Just for starters now, hit the Action button to see how this Preset draws your image for you. You can also manually brush the strokes over your image and even use pressure from your Wacom tablet (if you have one) to control the size of the individual images in your mosaic. If you're happy, skip ahead to the section called "Generating the Photomosaic." If not, you will probably want to select a larger or smaller movie brush, depending on your needs.
